I read in the magazine the other day, the importance of sign language with children... It says that we can actually start teaching them sign language since infant time, and that it's not only applicable for children that are mentally delayed, physically delayed, deaf or those with hearing problems... The articles mentioned something along the line where it helps us communicate with our children in a way that is easier for them to understand...

Today, I saw this topic in PPP, and decided to check out ChildSigning.com's website, and saw that they provide LOTS of products which teaches or rather, helps parents teach children sign language... The title of the products includes My First Signs, Playtime Signs, Everyday Signs (the first 3 volumes) and so on (they have up to 13 volumes), and even a Pactive Time DVD Series. What I should look into is Sign Babies, for babies mar... The whole range of products does look interesting, and not to mention, are AWARD WINNING products too...

I'm a little skeptical on sign languages for babies though... For the other groups of children which I have mentioned above, sign language could be helpful, as it would help the child communicate and be understood (I'm imagining the frustration I would have gotten if people around me couldn't understand what I want)... However, I am a little worried that if I would to teach Rachel sign language to communicate with us, would it make her feel that learning how to talk is no longer important, because she doesn't need to talk to be understood, so she'll just settle to using sign language. If my worry is true, then it does somehow or rather, slows her vocal development, don't you think? I guess I should be doing more research on this topic, before I really try sign language with my baby...
